Co-created by veteran showrunner Julie Plec and journalist Amy Chozick, 'The Girls on the Bus' is a workplace comedy that explores female empowerment. Inspired by 'Chasing Hillary', Chozick’s 2018 memoir about covering the Hillary Clinton campaign, the film narrates the story of a group of female journalists on the campaign trail. Plec and Chozick chose to create an alternate universe, that does not focus too much on politics despite being set in the world of high-stakes presidential campaigns. The 10-episode- series weaves the narratives of the personal and professional challenges faced by these female journalists and explores the problems in the field of journalism as well.

According to 'Screen Rant', 'The Girls on the Bus' has also something in common with Timothy Crouse’s 'Boys on the Bus', a seminal account of the 1972 election in which Thompson is a major character. Hunter S. Thompson, played by P.J. Sosko, also appears in 'The Girls on the Bus'. He serves as a figment of the main character Sadie’s imagination.
