A new trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites has confirmed that the film will explore the Smurl Haunting. This case involved reported paranormal events at a family home in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, over a 15-year period. The film is expected to focus on the year 1986, when the Warrens became involved.

Smurl Family Reports Paranormal Activity

Between 1974 and 1989, Jack and Janet Smurl claimed that a demon haunted their home. They said it created loud sounds and strong odors. It was also accused of physical violence. The family reported their dog was thrown into a wall. Their mattress was said to shake. One of their daughters was allegedly pushed down stairs. Some family members said they were physically and sexually harmed by the entity.

Paranormal Investigators Step In

In 1986, Ed and Lorraine Warren joined the investigation. Ed said the demon was strong. He also described cold air and a dark shadow inside the house. At one point, a message appeared on a mirror telling him to leave. The Warrens used religious music and prayers to attempt to remove the demon. Ed claimed he recorded the demon knocking on walls. Their investigation continued for several months.

The case received wide attention. Along with the Warrens, clergy, psychologists, and skeptics also visited the home. Each group gave different views on what might be happening. Some believed the events had natural or psychological causes.

In the same year the Warrens investigated, the Smurl story was turned into a book titled The Haunted. A made-for-TV movie with the same title came out in 1991. These earlier retellings shared the family's claims and the events surrounding them.

New Film Release Date

The new film will likely focus on the 1986 investigation, rather than the full 15-year timeline. The trailer hints at a dark tone. The movie will be released in cinemas on September 5, 2025.
