Columbia Pictures has announced the domestic release date for The Bone Temple, the sequel in the 28 Years Later trilogy. This film is set to hit theaters during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Release Date

The Bone Temple is scheduled for release on January 16, 2026. The first movie in the trilogy, 28 Years Later, will debut on June 20, 2025. Both films were shot back-to-back, with actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes in leading roles.

Storyline

The storyline builds upon the narrative of a world transformed by the rage virus. Survivors are now in enforced quarantine. According to the synopsis, a group lives on a secluded island linked to the mainland by a secure causeway. A member ventures into the mainland, uncovering mutated threats and secrets about both the infected and surviving humans.

Direction

Nia DaCosta directs the film, working from a screenplay by Alex Garland. DaCosta is known for her work on films, such as Candyman and The Marvels. Garland, who wrote the original 28 Days Later, also takes on production responsibilities alongside Danny Boyle and others.

The 28 Years Later trilogy is an extension of the original films. The first movie, 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, was released in 2002. It featured a young Cillian Murphy in the lead. Its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, arrived in 2007 and expanded on the apocalyptic world.
