A rainy afternoon and a problem nobody had bothered to fix
Moylan worked as a designer in Ford's plastics and paint division. He was not an engineer trying to find an invention, he was just frustrated. Per Ford Authority's account of his career, he joined Ford as a draftsman in body engineering in 1968 before moving into plastics engineering, and the idea for the arrow came on a rainy day in 1986, when he pulled a company car into a gas station to refuel it, only to discover he had parked on the wrong side of the pump.
