That free hotel breakfast may vanish soon — what it means for your next stay
Some hotels are stopping free breakfast completely. They are not just giving cheaper food like powdered eggs. Fancy hotels are more likely to make guests pay for breakfast because they think guests care more about good food than the price. Medium hotels are changing their normal breakfast. Experts say this might happen in cheap hotels too, where free breakfast is very popular.

Travelers will need to spend more money on food. A family of four might pay an extra $20–$25 per day if they eat breakfast in the hotel, and even more if the hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, as stated by Investopedia. Hotels are finding other ways to cut costs too: removing bathroom doors, mirrors, desks, reducing room service, giving fewer towels, and washing them less often.

Higher costs for families

At Hyatt Place in Chicago, breakfast for a two-parent family costs $22 extra on room rates. Eating the same meal outside could cost around $70 at a nearby Denny's. Amir Eylon, president and CEO of Longwoods International, said free breakfast is still an important attraction for hotels.

Even a basic continental breakfast can influence travelers’ choices. Business travelers may be more affected because they like quick, no-frills breakfasts. Vacationers care less since they often want to try local restaurants.

Testing breakfast charges

Most Hyatt Place hotels still offer free breakfast. The hotel is testing rates without breakfast at some locations. Sadie Lowell, founder of Bring Back Doors, said breakfast is one of the easiest things for hotels to remove without upsetting guests, as cited by Investopedia.

Free breakfast is still very popular. Surveys show 42% of guests call it a “need-to-have” and 53% a “nice-to-have” perk. Only 5% say it’s “not important.” Removing breakfast could be risky for mid-tier and budget hotels, especially those without many food options. Guests expect consistency across a hotel brand, and changing breakfast rules can upset them.
