US Congressman Sylvester Turner, a first-term Democrat from Texas and former Mayor of Houston, passed away on Tuesday. He was 70. He passed away following a medical emergency at the US Capitol. Turner had only recently taken charge of the office in January after winning his seat in the November elections.

His death was announced during a closed-door Democratic meeting. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, as per media reports, informed colleagues that Turner had passed away and that his family was notified.

Turner suffered a medical emergency

According to an NBC report, a fellow lawmaker reported seeing the Democrat rep experiencing a medical emergency in the underground tunnel that connects the Capitol with the Cannon Building on Tuesday afternoon.


Reportedly, Turner had dedicated over three decades of his life to public service. He served in the Texas House of Representatives before becoming Mayor of Houston in 2016.

His leadership in Houston received widespread recognition, and his move to Congress was viewed as a chance to leverage his extensive experience on a national level.

Tributes poured in for a dedicated public servant

The news of Turner’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from political figures, colleagues, and the Houston community.

Republican Congressman Randy Weber expressed his sorrow in a social media post. He, recalling their time working together, said that he and Brenda Gail are heartbroken by his passing. He said they served together in the Texas House. He also said that he was honoured to have worked alongside Turner in Congress.

“Just last night, we spoke on the House Floor—life is too short. We are praying for his family, friends, and all who are mourning his passing,” he wrote.

Dustin Burrows, a fellow Texas lawmaker and House speaker, offered condolences saying that Turner’s decades of public service leave behind a legacy of leadership and advocacy for the people of Houston.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire described Turner as “a remarkable public servant who impacted millions of people”. He added that Turner rose from poverty but he never forgot where he came from.

Meanwhile, the City of Houston announced that today’s City Council meeting would stand in recess in honour of Turner. The Houston Police Officers’ Union too issued a statement mourning his loss.

Congresswoman Terri Sewell summed up his contributions in her condolence post stating that he is leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of service as Mayor of Houston and the Representative for Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
