Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked a judge to put Beto O’Rourke in jail. Paxton says O’Rourke broke a court order by raising money to help Democratic lawmakers who left Texas. Earlier this month, a Texas judge stopped O’Rourke and his nonprofit group, Powered by People, from fundraising to support the Democratic lawmakers’ move out of Texas.

Paxton claims O’Rourke ignored this order and kept asking for donations through the Democrat's ActBlue platform. Paxton said, “He’s about to find out that running your mouth and ignoring the rule of law has consequences in Texas. It’s time to lock him up”, as per the report by USA Today.

What is the fight over redistricting in Texas?

This is part of a bigger fight in Texas between Republicans and Democrats over redrawing voting district maps, called redistricting. The GOP’s redistricting plan could add five more Republican seats in Congress before the 2026 elections. Democrats say this is unfair gerrymandering.

Why are Texas democrats leaving the state?

To stop the new maps from passing, many Democratic lawmakers fled Texas and went to states like Illinois and New York where they couldn't be forced to vote. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, ordered police to arrest the Democrats who left. Paxton also asked the Texas Supreme Court to remove these lawmakers from their seats because they abandoned their jobs, as stated in the report by USA Today.

In Paxton’s court filing, he quoted O’Rourke from a speech on August 9 in Fort Worth where O’Rourke said, "There are no refs in this game, f--- the rules." Paxton said this showed O’Rourke was disrespecting the court order. O’Rourke responded by posting the full video of his speech on X , saying Paxton took his words out of context.

O’Rourke called Paxton a "corrupt, lying thug" and said Paxton’s office lied in its court filing. He said Democrats will fight back hard. Besides jail time, Paxton also wants O’Rourke to be held in contempt of court and fined $500, as mentioned in the report by USA Today.
