Why are Texas democrats leaving the state?
To stop the new maps from passing, many Democratic lawmakers fled Texas and went to states like Illinois and New York where they couldn't be forced to vote. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, ordered police to arrest the Democrats who left. Paxton also asked the Texas Supreme Court to remove these lawmakers from their seats because they abandoned their jobs, as stated in the report by USA Today. In Paxton’s court filing, he quoted O’Rourke from a speech on August 9 in Fort Worth where O’Rourke said, "There are no refs in this game, f--- the rules."
