Texan man is preparing to complete his 75th marathon

Along with 30,000 others, Richard Newman is in town to participate in his first New York City Marathon.

Richard Newman native of San Antonio before discovering his love for running, read a book that said anyone who could complete a marathon would never develop heart disease.

Then, Newman's dad passed away. He was motivated to accept the challenge by his defeat. The 1978 San Antonio Marathon served as Newman's debut marathon. His first trip to New York City was in 1991 whose father immigrated through the city in 1938.

Along with 30,000 others, he was in town to participate in his first New York City Marathon. And it wouldn't be his last either.


But in October 2015, just a few days before Newman and his wife Julie were scheduled to start the marathon, they were in the middle of a run when Newman's health began to deteriorate.

Newman was no longer breathing. Julie, a nurse, began chest compressions and continued them for 13 minutes. When emergency medical personnel came, they revived him with a defibrillator.

The couple came back to New York for the marathon in 2016 following a year of recuperation.

This Sunday, Newman will run the marathon in New York once again to commemorate his 75th marathon. Despite Julie's inability to accompany him this year, Newman isn't alone: He writes the name of his late brother, Ron, on his jersey so that he can hear people applaud it as he runs 26.2 miles around the city.
