Tesla stock price today: Why TSLA falls as Democrats’ midterm election win puts Elon Musk’s AI data center plans at risk
Tesla stock (TSLA) fell as Democrats’ midterm victories raised concerns about AI data center expansion, particularly in Texas. Analyst Dan Ives warned that political hurdles could slow planned projects, while Elon Musk floated the idea of space-ba...

Tesla Stock Price Down Today
Tesla shares, SpaceX, and other companies exposed to the AI infrastructure boom, including CoreWeave, IREN and Vertiv, also traded lower as investors assessed the possible implications of the election results.Dan Ives, Yorkville's partner and managing director, warned that "There is no way to sugarcoat that Democrats taking control, especially over the Senate, will create some major hurdles for AI and tech legislation in the Beltway over the next 2 years," as quoted by Yahoo Finance. He expects the political environment to slow the development of between 800 and 1,000 planned AI data centers.
Texas Election Raises Questions for Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX
Texas has emerged as a key concern following Democrat Gina Hinojosa’s victory over Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. Abbott had maintained a moratorium on data centers, and investors had expected it to end if he won reelection.Ives described Hinojosa as a politician known for opposing data center expansion. He estimates that Texas could account for 25% to 30% of data center capacity, making the state’s political direction particularly important for companies planning large AI infrastructure investments.
Musk has major business interests in Texas, including Tesla and SpaceX operations. Hinojosa has also called for a halt to new data center projects until stronger community protections are in place and opposed potential tax breaks for the industry, as per NBC News report.
The election doesn't mean that existing projects will automatically be canceled. However, tougher approval processes & greater scrutiny of electricity costs could delay construction and create uncertainty for companies counting on rapid expansion.

Elon Musk Floats Space-Based Data Centers
Musk responded to the debate on X, writing, "Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now."His comment came as questions mounted over the future of large computing facilities on Earth. SpaceX has been expanding its AI infrastructure through facilities including Colossus and Colossus II near Memphis, Tennessee.
Delays to those projects could affect SpaceX’s revenue targets, although the election results have not mentioned that any specific development will be postponed.
Could Political Pressure Weigh on Tesla Stock
The immediate concern for investors is whether political resistance to data center expansion will slow the broader AI investment boom. SpaceX has also been taking steps toward a potential merger with Tesla, adding another connection between Musk’s AI ambitions and Tesla’s market outlook. Not everyone expects the election results to derail the industry. Ives remains bullish on AI over the longer term, while Fundstrat’s Tom Lee has argued that political opposition may be limited, saying, "President Trump exercises veto power vs any potential 'anti-AI' 'anti-data center' bills," as quoted by Yahoo Finance.
