Tesla Autopilot: Tesla has officially discontinued its Autopilot system, the company’s long-standing basic driver-assistance feature, as it pushes customers toward its more advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, as per a report.

California Regulators Target Tesla Over Misleading Autopilot Claims

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny from California regulators, which last December ruled that Tesla overstated the capabilities of both Autopilot and FSD in its marketing, as per a TechCrunch report. The California DMV, which oversees Tesla’s licenses in the state, granted a 60-day window to comply, giving the company time to retire the Autopilot branding.

What Tesla Autopilot Offered: Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer

Autopilot, a combination of Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer, once allowed Tesla vehicles to maintain speed, keep distance from other cars, and navigate curves. Tesla’s website now shows that new vehicles come standard only with Traffic Aware Cruise Control, though it is unclear whether existing owners will see any changes.

Changes to FSD Pricing: $8,000 Fee Ends, $99 Subscription Starts

The shift aligns with a new approach to FSD pricing. Beginning February 14, Tesla will end the $8,000 one-time purchase option for the software. Instead, customers can access FSD via a $99 monthly subscription, which Elon Musk says will increase as the system’s capabilities improve.

Tesla Robotaxis Hit Austin Roads With Advanced FSD Software

Musk has suggested that future FSD updates could allow “unsupervised” driving, enabling drivers to “be on your phone or sleeping for the entire ride,” although texting while driving remains illegal in most states, as per the TechCrunch report.

Tesla has already rolled out the first robotaxi versions of its Model Y SUVs in Austin, Texas, operating without human safety monitors. These cars run an advanced version of FSD, though they are still followed by other company vehicles for supervision.

Why Adoption of Full Self-Driving Software Has Been Slow

Despite the technological promise, adoption of FSD has been slow. In October 2025, Tesla’s CFO Vaibhav Taneja revealed that only 12% of customers had purchased the software. Achieving 10 million active subscriptions by 2035 is a key target tied to Musk’s $1 trillion compensation plan.

Tesla’s Roadmap for Driver Assistance Software and Safety

Autopilot has been a part of Tesla’s vehicles since the early 2010s, following failed talks with Google to license its self-driving technology, and by April 2019, it became standard on all Teslas. Over more than a decade, Tesla struggled to communicate the system’s limitations clearly, and overpromising the capabilities led some drivers to become overconfident, resulting in hundreds of crashes and at least 13 fatalities, TechCrunch reported, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
