Terry McLaurin requests trade amid contract dispute with Washington Commanders
Terry McLaurin has requested a trade from the Washington Commanders following a contract impasse. The Pro Bowl receiver, entering the final year of a $68.4 million deal, has been a top performer for Washington since 2019. With negotiations stalled, the Commanders may now shift focus to Deebo Samuel as WR1

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin has formally requested a trade, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. The move marks a major escalation in ongoing contract negotiations between McLaurin and the organization, who have failed to reach terms on an extension during the 2025 offseason.
McLaurin, 29, is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.4 million deal signed in 2022. He held out for the first four days of training camp before reporting with an ankle injury, which resulted in his placement on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. McLaurin was previously fined $105,000 for skipping mandatory minicamp, with fines totaling over $300,000 after missing early camp practices, per The Washington Post.

A third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, McLaurin has led Washington in receiving yards in each of his six seasons. He has recorded four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and ranks seventh in franchise history in career receiving yards with 6,408. He also holds the team record for most consecutive games with at least 60 receiving yards (11), set during the 2022 season.
“I’ve been pretty frustrated, not going to lie,” McLaurin told reporters. “Everything that has transpired has been pretty disappointing. I want to continue my career here, I’ve created my life here, so I want to be here. Just to see how things have played out has been disappointing.”
In 2024, McLaurin was a key contributor to a 12-5 Commanders team that reached the NFC Championship Game. He developed strong chemistry with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, totaling 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns in the regular season, and adding 227 yards with three scores during the postseason.
Should McLaurin be traded, Deebo Samuel is expected to assume WR1 duties. Noah Brown and tight end Zach Ertz remain part of the Commanders’ primary receiving corps. Washington opens its season at home against the New York Giants on September 7.
