Despite emergency responders’ attempts to save him, Adams was pronounced dead at the scene by Shelby County Fire personnel.
Four other men sustained non-life-threatening gunshot injuries during the incident and arrived at local hospitals in personal vehicles. Law enforcement officials have not identified any suspects but are investigating the shooting as a homicide.
Adams, considered one of the nation’s top defensive line recruits, had recently joined the University of Mississippi football program.
Ole Miss expressed profound sorrow over his death, sharing in a social media post that they were 'devastated' by the loss.
"While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the statement read. The team also asked for the community’s support and respect for the privacy of those affected.
Adams’ former high school team, the Edna Karr Cougars in New Orleans, also paid tribute, describing him as much more than a football player.
"Corey Adams was a friend, brother, son, student, and all around great young man," the team wrote on Facebook. "We never question God but this is one we just don’t understand."
