The NFL quarterback, who signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday, faced disciplinary action for what he described as mentoring and supporting local players. Bridgewater, who has long been active in youth development, said that his intent was never to violate any rules but to uplift and guide the next generation.
After retiring at the end of the 2023 NFL season, former first-round pick Bridgewater returned to his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, as head coach. In his debut season, he made an instant impact by leading the team to a state championship.
Bridgewater briefly stepped back onto the field, joining the Detroit Lions as Jared Goff’s backup during their playoff run last year. Now 32, he planned to resume coaching this year, but was suspended over alleged violations related to player benefits.
A viral post on July 7 revealed Bridgewater had spent about $1,500 weekly on Uber rides, meals, and recovery services for his players, and had begun seeking donations to continue his support.

"Honestly, I think everyone knows that I'm just a cheerful guy, a cheerful giver as well. I'm a protector. I'm a father first before anything," he began.
"When I decided to coach, those players became my sons and I wanted to make sure that I just protect them in the best way that I can. I think that's what came about."
"Miami Northwestern is in a tough neighborhood, and sometimes things can happen when kids are walking home and different things like that. So, I just tried to protect them, give them a ride home instead of them having to take those dangerous walks. I just want people to continue to see me for the person that I've been from the time I arrived in the NFL, from the time that I arrived at the University of Louisville - just a humble guy who has a big heart and a cheerful giver," Bridgewater added.
