She experienced cardiac arrest during Swift's performance of "Cruel Summer" at the opening show of 'The Eras Tour' in Rio de Janeiro on November 17.
The incident occurred amidst soaring temperatures of 105°F in the city. Following the distressing event, Ana was quickly transported from Nilton Santos Stadium to a nearby hospital, where she ultimately passed away. The autopsy revealed that she had been subjected to extreme heat.
The woman succumbed to cardiovascular shock and lung damage due to heat exposure, ultimately leading to her death. According to the report, Benevides' cause of death was alveolar hemorrhage—a rupture in the blood vessels supplying the lungs—and polyvisceral congestion, resulting from extreme heat-induced lung paralysis.
The report also ruled out pre-existing conditions or substance abuse as contributing factors to her death. Benevides collapsed while watching the concert with her friends from the first two rows.
After 40 minutes of resuscitation efforts, she experienced cardiac arrest in an ambulance, but despite doctors' efforts, her life could not be saved.
Attendees at the event faced extreme temperatures, with a heat index exceeding 140F at Nilton Santos Stadium. Security restrictions prevented fans from bringing their own water.
Firefighters on-site noted that over 1,000 fans fainted due to the intense heat during the concert.
The November 18 concert, initially slated to begin, got postponed and rescheduled to November 20 due to extreme temperatures.
Expressing concern for the safety of her fans, fellow performers, and crew, Swift conveyed on social media, “Their well-being will always be my top priority.”
Swift extended an invitation to Benevides' family and friends for a São Paulo show on November 26.
In a video on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, attendees at the show, clad in white t-shirts featuring Machado's face, were shown, with Swift joining them after the performance for a group photo.
Rio's public prosecutor's office has initiated a criminal investigation. According to a Wednesday statement from Rio police, once the forensics report is examined, the company responsible for organizing the event will be summoned for testimony.
