While the specifics were not disclosed at the time, his character's absence was addressed in a season 11 episode, attributing it to an opportunity for Severide to undergo a prestigious arson investigation training program. However, when Severide didn't return to Chicago as anticipated, it left both his on-screen wife, Stella Kidd (played by Miranda Rae Mayo), and fans concerned.
