What taxi fare changes are coming on January 1?

Starting January 1, taxi riders in Arlington will see higher prices across all fare categories. The initial “drop charge” will increase by one dollar, rising from $3.50 to $4.50. This base fee applies as soon as a passenger enters a cab, meaning every trip will begin at a higher cost.

Distance-based pricing is also changing. Charges will move from 40 cents per one-sixth of a mile to 52 cents per one-fifth of a mile, increasing the overall cost of longer journeys, as per a report by The US Sun.

How much more will riders pay per mile and per minute?

Waiting time will become noticeably more expensive under the new rules. The cost will rise from 40 cents to 56 cents for every 52-second interval. This means riders stuck in traffic or waiting at stops will see their fares climb faster than before.

Under the new rates, a five-mile trip will cost $17.50. That represents a 12.5% increase, according to local outlet ARLnow. A 10-mile journey will now cost $30.50, which is a 10.9% rise compared to last year. For longer rides, the impact is even clearer: a 25-mile trip will now cost $69.50, a 9.5% increase from current prices, as per a report by The US Sun.

Why did officials approve higher taxi fares?

County officials say the fare increases are intended to support drivers and help taxi companies remain competitive. In a memo sent to Board members, county staff explained, "These adjustments are expected to provide meaningful relief for drivers while keeping Arlington’s rates in line with nearby jurisdictions and more competitive for driver recruitment.”

The Arlington County Board met on December 13 to consider the changes. This marks only the second taxi fare increase in under a decade, with the last adjustment taking place in 2016.

County Board Chair Takis Karantonis said officials regularly review taxi rates to ensure the industry remains viable. “We have the responsibility and jurisdiction to adjust them from time to time,” he said.

Are other regions also raising taxi prices?

Arlington is not alone in revisiting taxi fares. Officials in Kaua’i County, Hawaii, have also supported fare increases. Under proposed changes, starting meter rates for taxis used on chartered tours will rise, as per a report by The US Sun.

For trips lasting up to two hours, prices would jump by $60, increasing from $120 to $180, according to Kaua’i News Now.
