Right-wing influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have left Romania for the United States after the lifting of their travel ban.

The Tate brothers, who hold dual UK-US nationality, were charged in Romania with human trafficking, forming an organised crime group and sexually exploiting women.

Andrew also faces a rape charge. However, both brothers have denied all allegations.

Their lawyer, Ioan Gliga, said that they left for Florida on Thursday morning after Romanian prosecutors lifted their travel restrictions at the defence’s request, according to media reports.

Despite being allowed to leave the country, the brothers still have legal obligations in Romania, including appearing in court when summoned.

Alleged US pressure and political controversy

A CNN report, citing the Financial Times, suggested that the decision to lift the travel restrictions may have been politically influenced. Speculation has been mounting ever since the decision was made public.

According to reports, Donald Trump’s administration exerted pressure on Romanian authorities to lift the travel ban on the Tate brothers. Initially, Trump reportedly intervened via a phone call and later escalated the matter through a meeting between his special envoy, Richard Grenell, and Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu during the Munich Security Conference.

Hurezeanu, as reported by the Associated Press, acknowledged that discussions regarding the Tate case had taken place with US officials. But he insisted that the Romanian government had not been pressured. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs later issued a denial, stating that there was no pressure.

Legal challenges in Romania and the UK

Despite their departure, the Tate brothers remain subject to legal proceedings in Romania. Media reports indicate that they are due in court on March 24. Their initial trial attempt collapsed in December due to procedural issues, but prosecutors have since reopened the case.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the brothers face separate allegations of sexual offences committed between 2012 and 2015. British police have issued arrest warrants, and UK courts have sought their extradition.

But Romanian judicial authorities have ruled that extradition will only be considered after they have served any potential sentence in Romania.

In addition to their legal troubles, the brothers also face financial penalties. British authorities have frozen around $3.3 million in assets linked to them.
