Tariff relief checks 2026

Tariff relief checks 2026: Millions of Americans could soon see extra money in their pockets under a new proposal from Senate Democrats aimed at refunding the cost of higher prices linked to tariffs imposed during US president Donald Trump’s administration.

Tariff relief checks: Who stands to benefit

Led by Martin Heinrich, the legislation, called the Tariff Refunds for Working Families Act, would create a tax rebate program designed to return tariff revenue directly to working and middle-income households, as per a report.

Why Senate Democrats are pushing for refunds now

Heinrich said that, “The President may call the affordability crisis a ‘hoax,’ but working people feel it every time they pay for groceries or everyday essentials. This bill will return the money lost to Trump’s tariffs back to the people who paid the price,” and pointed out that the revenue collected from the tariffs should go back to the families who absorbed the higher costs rather than remain with the federal government, as quoted by Newsweek.

Supreme Court ruling on Trump tariffs explained

The push comes after courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States, ruled that some of the tariffs were imposed unlawfully. According to Heinrich and his colleagues, those tariffs drove up consumer costs as businesses passed along higher import expenses.

How much money Americans could receive

If passed, the plan would deliver payments through the IRS in the form of a “Working Families Refund.” Eligible taxpayers could receive $600 for single filers earning $90,000 or less, $600 for heads of household earning up to $120,000, and $1,200 for married couples earning up to $180,000. Families would also get an additional $600 per dependent child, as per the Newsweek report.

That means a family of four earning under $180,000 could receive as much as $2,400 in total relief.

Income limits and eligibility criteria explained

Supporters say the income limits are meant to focus on households most affected by rising costs, while excluding higher earners, as per the Newsweek report. The rebates would be funded using more than $160 billion in tariff revenue already collected nationwide.

Key senators backing the proposal

The bill is backed by several Senate Democrats, including Ruben Gallego, Chris Van Hollen, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Tammy Duckworth.
