Baker Mayfield fueled the decisive march, scrambling 15 yards on fourth-and-10 before hitting Bucky Irving for 22 yards to the Houston 23. White and Irving combined for 136 rushing yards, with White sealing a statement night for the Buccaneers’ ground game. Mayfield endured four sacks but stayed composed, finishing 25 of 38 for 215 yards and two touchdowns while also adding 33 rushing yards.
The Texans looked poised for victory when Nick Chubb broke loose for a 25-yard score, giving Houston a 19-14 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Rookie Jaylin Noel’s 53-yard punt return and a blocked punt had also provided sparks, but Houston’s offense otherwise struggled, producing just 32 rushing yards before Chubb’s late burst.
CJ Stroud threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Nico Collins for a 29-yard strike on Houston’s opening drive. He was pressured often, taking three sacks. Both teams missed two-point tries after their late touchdowns.
Tampa Bay led 14-10 at halftime on Mayfield touchdown passes to Ryan Miller and Emeka Egbuka, but the third quarter was dominated by defense. Danielle Hunter notched two sacks for Houston, reaching the 100-sack milestone. Still, the Buccaneers’ resilience carried the night as they improved to 2-0, while the Texans fell to 0-2.
