Taiwan is negotiating a new arms package with the United States, valued between $7 billion and $10 billion, as part of its broader strategy to enhance military readiness.

With China intensifying its territorial claims, Taiwan is seeking advanced weaponry to bolster its defences. The proposed deal includes coastal defence cruise missiles and HIMARS rockets, which will significantly enhance Taiwan's ability to deter potential aggression.

Pressure from China

Beijing continues to assert its claim over Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve unification. Taiwan, however, firmly rejects these claims, stating that its future should be decided solely by its people.

In response to increasing military threats, Taiwan has ramped up defence spending, which now accounts for approximately 2.5 per cent of its GDP.

Strengthening international alliances, particularly with the United States, remains a key component of Taiwan's defence strategy.

US-Taiwan military relationship

Although Taiwan and the United States do not share formal diplomatic ties, the US is Taiwan’s primary source of military support.

Successive US administrations have approved major arms deals, including F-16 fighter jets and HIMARS units, to strengthen Taiwan’s military capabilities.

In addition to providing high-tech weaponry, the US has facilitated military training programmes, helping Taiwan strengthen its air defence systems, precision weaponry, anti-drone technology and reserve forces.

Taiwan’s defence push

While the U.S. continues to support Taiwan, uncertainties remain regarding future relations, particularly in areas such as trade, tariffs and semiconductor exports. Nonetheless, Taiwan’s commitment to military readiness highlights its determination to safeguard its sovereignty against external threats.
