Sydney Sweeney attends ‘Americana’ screening in Los Angeles, marking first public appearance since American Eagle denim campaign controversy
Actress Sydney Sweeney stepped out in public for the first time since the controversy surrounding her American Eagle denim campaign. The 27-year-old star attended a special screening of her new film, Americana on Sunday, August 3, at Desert 5 Spot in Los Angeles.

Sweeney wore a custom Danielle Frankel dress featuring a corset bodice and a flowing tulle ballgown skirt, paired with a matching light yellow headband and Effy jewelry. She was seen posing with co-stars, including singer Halsey and actor Simon Rex, and shared a conversation with Halsey before the movie began.

Her new film - Americana

Americana is a modern Western set in a South Dakota town where the theft of a prized Lakota "ghost shirt," a sacred Native American artifact, triggers a dangerous conflict. The film explores themes of cultural heritage, crime, and community as characters from different walks of life become intertwined in the struggle to reclaim the artifact.

The Americana cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane and Zahn McClarnon. The film is set in a South Dakota town as everyone gets embroiled in a plot to steal a prized Lakota "ghost shirt."

The “jeans” controversy

The screening marks a shift in focus for Sweeney, whose recent denim campaign with American Eagle sparked widespread debate. The campaign’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” was criticized by some who felt the pun on “jeans” and “genes” carried racial overtones and suggested genetic superiority. The campaign was also compared to Brooke Shields’ controversial 1980 Calvin Klein denim ad, which faced criticism for its provocative messaging involving a 15-year-old Shields.

Supporters of the campaign argued the backlash was overblown and misunderstood.

In response to the criticism, American Eagle issued a statement on August 1, clarifying the intent of the campaign:

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”

Sydney Sweeney herself has not publicly commented on the controversy.
