Swatch, following the overwhelming success of last year’s white-dial Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, is once again launching a timepiece honouring horology and space exploration.

The Swiss watchmaker has announced the release of the MoonSwatch 1965.

According to reports, the MoonSwatch 1965 commemorates the 60th anniversary of NASA’s qualification of the Omega Speedmaster as the official watch for manned space missions.

A report by GQ stated that this latest addition to the Bioceramic MoonSwatch series is inspired by the Omega Speedmaster 1965 ST105.003 — the same model that endured NASA’s rigorous testing before being certified for space travel on March 1, 1965.

The watch’s design reflects its historical significance. The MoonSwatch 1965 features a grey Bioceramic case, a black tachymeter bezel, and a striking white dial.

Design steeped in history

As per GQ, the MoonSwatch 1965 has been crafted with contemporary precision while drawing inspiration from the classic Speedmaster.

The numerals "19" and "65" are subtly etched into the subdials — a playful nod to the Speedmaster’s legacy.

Additionally, under UV light, the numbers "19", "65", and "60" emit a blue glow, paying tribute to the original NASA-certified Speedmaster.

On the underside of the MoonSwatch 1965, the battery cover features an image of the moon — reinforcing its connection to space exploration.

The grey Velcro strap is reminiscent of those worn by astronauts over their spacesuits. While a metal bracelet might offer a different aesthetic, reports suggest that Swatch enthusiasts would not be content with it.

Honouring a spaceflight icon

The Speedmaster secured its place in space history only after NASA challenged watchmakers to prove the stability of their timepieces under extreme conditions. Only Rolex, Longines, and Omega dared to put their watches through rigorous tests, including extreme temperature variations and humidity assessments.

Ultimately, on March 1, 1965, only the Speedmaster survived, becoming NASA’s official timepiece — a title it retains to this day.
