Americans are wanting to put an end to partisan politics, want courageous leaders who are willing to take tough decisions and want to elect leaders who focus on effective governance. This is the crux of a poll that was conducted by Emerson College in the month of May. It was commissioned by The Common Good which is a non-partisan and a pro-democracy organization. The survey highlighted the voter’s frustration with the current political situation in the country. This has been reported by The Hill. The survey contains the responses of 1000 registered voters on various issues of national importance.

Findings of the survey:

One key finding of the survey is that 69% of the respondents felt that the government was a divided house and was no longer serving the interest of the Americans. Over 75% of them also added that political leaders promote and encourage societal divisions to further their own political interest rather than building consensus and unity, which are key indicators of national prosperity.

In what may be termed as cynical, only 44% of the respondents said they believed that the American dream still exists. The founder of the organization Patricia Duff added that this level of cynicism has never been seen before. She also said that this dissatisfaction among Americans is impacting the governance process in the country. 68% of the respondents also sought to have candidates who were willing to compromise to enforce key legislations, winning the elections. Lastly, an overwhelming number of respondents sought political courage from their leaders. 89% of the respondents wanted their leaders to take tough decisions in the interest of the nation.

Political choices:

The survey found both the leading candidates in the upcoming presidential elections facing an enthusiasm gap. A number of surveys indicate that the voters are not happy with either Joe Biden or Donald Trump. Many indicated their preference for Robert Kennedy Jr who may play a key role in certain swing states. Many of the respondents also indicated that key issues such as women’s rights mattered to them ahead of the elections.
