A Las Vegas man, seen in a viral video attacking a judge during a court session, has been sentenced to a prison term ranging from 26 to 65 years.

What Happened

In January, Deobra Redden, 31, attacked Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus in ‘Superman style’ during a court hearing. The incident occurred as Holthus was about to sentence him in a separate criminal case. Redden jumped over her bench and tackled her to the floor.

Court staff intervened to stop the attack. Following the incident, Redden was charged with attempted murder. He pleaded guilty to the charge in September.

During the sentencing hearing, Redden addressed the court, claiming he had no intention of killing Judge Holthus. He stated he did not remember all the details of the attack but recalled grabbing her robe.

Redden, who has schizophrenia, acknowledged his mental health challenges but insisted he was not a violent person. He said he cared about Judge Holthus’ well-being and expressed regret for his actions.

Victim’s Statement and Prosecutors’ Stand

In a victim impact statement read by prosecutors, Judge Holthus described the attack as a deliberate attempt to harm her. She stated that Redden made a conscious decision to try to kill her.

Prosecutors highlighted Redden’s history of violent crimes and his lack of medication at the time of the attack. They argued for a strict sentence, emphasizing the severity of the incident.

Defense Arguments and Sentencing

Redden’s lawyer, Carl Arnold, argued for a lighter sentence, suggesting that his client’s mental health struggles and medication compliance should be considered. Arnold said Redden had shown remorse and compliance since resuming his treatment.
