Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are finally coming to Switch – get ready for 4K magic

Nintendo has officially announced that the beloved Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are heading to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, in regard to the celebration of Super Mario's 40th anniversary.

Both the games will be launched as a combined physical release scheduled on October 2, 2025, and will also be available digitally as individual purchases. The updated version has advanced resolution (up to 4K on Switch 2), a better user interface, a fresh in-game music player, and the choice to play through button-and-stick or motion based controls.

Miyamoto Reveals Games and Movie

Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the two games' return today in the company's significant Nintendo Direct, which also gave fans a sneak peak at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to the smash-hit Super Mario Movie, set to be launched in the next spring.


For newcomers, the Galaxy titles are celebrated for their gravity-defying mechanics, often regarded as the pinnacle of 3D Mario adventures. The games will also include a story factor, rare for Nintendo, extensive space princess Rosalina's backstory.

New Amiibo and Additional Feature

The Switch introduction will be incorporated by two new Super Mario Galaxy amiibo, providing extra in-games. Scanning Mario & Luma unlocks a Life Mushroom, while Rosalina & Lumas provide a 1-Up Mushroom.

The first amiibo portrays Mario being introduced through a Warp Star, chased by a Luma, while the second shows Rosalina reading from her storybook by two Lumas. These amiibo are scheduled to be launched on April 2, 2026, in the same time as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A hardcover edition of Rosalina's storybook will also be released , although it does not have the latest story narrative added in the games' Switch editions.

Other Announcements

Nintendo also revealed the sponsorship of the Kyoto Marathon 2026 and a refreshed Nintendo Museum ticket design. The September 2025 Nintendo Direct flourished with updates, such as significant news about Zelda, Pokémon, and Fire Emblem.
