NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who has been aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for over 250 days, has finally addressed concerns about her extended stay in space. Originally, Williams and fellow astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore were set to return after just eight days, but technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft have kept them in orbit far longer than planned.

Their delayed return has sparked public and political attention, with former U.S. President Donald Trump calling on Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring them back. However, Williams has reassured the world that she and her crewmate are safe and continuing their work aboard the ISS.

Why has Sunita Williams been in space for so long?

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched aboard the Boeing Starliner on June 5, 2024, as part of its first crewed mission. The plan was to test the spacecraft for an eight-day mission before returning to Earth. However, shortly after docking at the ISS, NASA detected several technical issues with the Starliner, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions.

Due to these concerns, NASA delayed their return multiple times to ensure the spacecraft is safe for reentry. As a backup, NASA has now planned to bring the astronauts back in late March 2025 using a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.

Trump’s request to Elon Musk for astronauts’ return

On January 2025, Donald Trump publicly urged Elon Musk to step in and bring Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore back to Earth, suggesting that the astronauts had been "abandoned" in space. Trump’s statement quickly gained attention, sparking concerns over the astronauts' safety.

Sunita Williams’ response: “We are not stranded”

Amid growing speculation, Sunita Williams clarified her situation, saying, "I don’t think I’m abandoned. I don’t think we’re stuck up here." She explained that while the delay was unexpected, she and Wilmore are safe, well-supplied, and continuing scientific research aboard the ISS.

A recent image of Williams looking thinner also raised health concerns, but she reassured the public that this was due to fluid shift—a common effect of microgravity where bodily fluids move upwards, changing facial appearance. She also emphasized that she has been exercising regularly to maintain muscle strength. (Source: NYPost)

When will Sunita Williams return to earth?

NASA has confirmed that Williams and Wilmore are set to return in late March 2025 via a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. Despite Trump’s comments, this plan was already in place before his intervention.
