Sugarcoating or realness? The truth behind celebrity docuseries
The Guardian report showed that many celebs like Taylor Swift, Pamela Anderson, Brooke Shields, Sylvester Stallone, Coleen Rooney, Robbie Williams, and even the Beckhams have taken center stage in documentaries – and many of them have taken matter...

As per a report by the Guardian, these documentaries often paint a rosy picture, leaving out the not-so-pleasant bits. Take Harry & Meghan's Netflix special, for example. It spilled the tea on their love story and issues with the royal family but conveniently skipped over Meghan's first marriage or any opinions that might challenge their narrative. And let's not forget David Beckham skirting around his alleged affairs or his controversial World Cup gig in Qatar.
Beyoncé's "Renaissance" also plays the same game, steering clear of controversies like her exclusive performance in Dubai, a country where being gay is illegal. Instead, it focuses on how her music was inspired by 80s ballroom culture.
So, why the surge in these self-made, sugar-coated documentaries? Money plays a big part. Celebs can't risk anything that might tarnish their public image, and brands are cautious about who they associate with. Plus, fans are hungry for content about their favourite stars.
However, not every celeb goes for the polished version of their story. Some, like Selena Gomez and Tyson Fury, hand over the storytelling reins to independent sources, resulting in more genuine, unfiltered productions. Gomez's documentary, "My Mind & Me," took six years to capture her struggles with bipolar disorder, providing an intimate look at her life.
Despite the lack of a critical eye in these documentaries, people can't seem to get enough. Viewers flock to watch, making these films trend and break records. But the irony is that, by relinquishing control, stars like Gomez and Fury reveal a more authentic side – the messy, real-life bits that make them human. It might not always be pretty, but it's genuine, and that, in the world of carefully managed celebrity images, is quite a revelation.
