Strike shuts down Canada's CP Rail

It is the second-largest operator in the railroad space and blamed the Union for misrepresenting the position of the company.

Canadian Pacific Railway temporarily stopped its operations and kept out its workers due to a labor dispute on Sunday. Prices are soaring high, and shipment of some essential commodities would likely be disrupted as both sides blame each other for the halt.

Teamsters Canada Rail Conference spokesman said that they are highly disappointed with the way things have turned out. They stated that their countrywide strike would affect 3,000 conductors, engineers, and yard workers. They stated that Teamsters are aware of the widespread damage this action would cause in the supply chain of Canada.

Federal mediators are in discussions over the issue between Teamsters and CP, stated the Minister of Labour Seamus O'Regan Jr. He expects the parties to come to a beneficial conclusion. It came as a tweet after midnight.

Canada is the largest country in terms of area after Russia and heavily depends on the rail for its manufactured goods and commodities transit to the ports.

CP has a network that spreads across southern Canada and goes as far as Kansas City in the US. Canada's supply chain is already suffering, and this has posed a new problem for Canada. The lockout would affect grain, coal, and potash movement. Last year the floods destroyed the biggest port in Canada and disrupted operations.

Wednesday saw CP notify the Union that the employees would be locked out this Sunday. Only a breakthrough through discussion covering pay, pensions, and benefits can stop the lockdown.

CP states that the key issue is a request by the Union for higher pension caps than the current ones. Nadeem Velani, a CFO (Chief Financial Officer), explicitly said that the railway is not interested in this proposal.

If the lockout stays for more time, then Canada's Nutrien would have to reduce the production of potash in its mines. The previous major railway disruption happened in 2019. In the past 12 years, there have been 12 occasions where the ports have been unable to see operations due to bad weather, labor issues, or blockades.
