Strasburg Rail Road steam engine collides with tracked excavator
In an accident, a steam engine of Strasburg Rail Road collided with a tracked excavator, or "trackhoe," which was parked on a spur.

Strasburg Rail Road’s 4-8-0 steam engine No. 475 collided with a tracked excavator, or "trackhoe," parked on a spur on Wednesday morning, November 2. No injuries resulted, and the engine remained on the track.
The Strasburg crash happened because of a misaligned switch accidentally left open by the maintenance crew when they tied down the track hoe on the spur and the engine operator's inability to operate the engine at "restricted speed".
The smokebox's front and door, headlight, the trackhoe's bucket, piston and hydraulic hoses have been wrecked. The trackhoe arm did not damage anything vital to steam operation of the engine.
The accident happened at 11:23 a.m. The runaround maneuver was captured on video by a passenger on the train and streamed live by a Virtual Railfan camera mounted on a pole near the switch where the collision occurred.
There have been rumblings that the damage to engine 475 is less severe than it seems, and the shop team is hopeful that it may be repaired and returned to service as soon as next week.
FRA officials will visit the railroad this Thursday to check over train No. 475 and chat with the crew.
