As he aged, his body deteriorated, but his dreams for science never faded away. Stephen Hawking became one of the most popular theoretical physicists in the world, asking some of the greatest questions that humankind could ever think of, such as how was the universe created, what goes on in a black hole, and what does physics have in store for our future? His greatest contribution came as a result of his study on black holes. Black holes were believed to absorb everything but let nothing out. However, Hawking proved that due to quantum mechanics, black holes could release radiation and shed mass. This process is called Hawking radiation.
Quote of the day
Quote of the day - "The human capacity for guilt is such that people can always find ways to blame themselves," comes from Stephen Hawking's 2010 book 'The Grand Design'.
Meaning of the quote
But Hawking's influence extended far beyond academic physics. His 1988 book 'A Brief History of Time' attempted something incredibly difficult - bringing complex ideas about space, time, black holes, and the universe to ordinary readers. It became an international bestseller and helped turn Hawking into a global cultural figure.
As his condition progressed, Hawking communicated using a computerized speech-generating device. His unique voice made him recognizable right away. It was also an important reminder that although he could not talk normally anymore, he was still able to convey very amazing things. He died on March 14, 2018, leaving behind a very influential legacy for modern physics.
His story is sometimes reduced to one of 'overcoming disability', but that misses something important. Hawking was not remarkable simply because he worked while living with ALS. He was remarkable because of the questions he asked, the scientific ideas he developed, and his determination to make the mysteries of the universe understandable to millions. His body imposed enormous limitations. His curiosity did not.
