State of Alabama vs. Brittany Smith: Here's all about Netflix documentary
Brittany Smith, who admits to shooting her rapist after being attacked in her own house, is the subject of a new Netflix true-crime documentary.

Smith's case drew the attention of a New Yorker article, in part because Smith used the "stand your ground" defense. State law in over 30 US states, including Alabama, deems it permissible to use fatal force to protect oneself against threats or even suspected threats. In this case, Smith was besieged in her own house by her assailant, an old acquaintance named Todd Smith, who threatened to murder her if she contacted the police.
However, her defense of standing your ground failed. In reality, according to journalist Elizabeth Flock, who serves as executive producer on the Netflix series, women are far less likely than men to effectively invoke "stand your ground." Reportedly, Flock says, the scenes that did not make the film's riveting and efficient had a 40-minute edit.
Flock was actively hunting for a tale similar to Smith's at the time. He stated that he was aware of several incidents of women killing their abusers and, to a lesser extent, their rapists throughout the years.
