Star Trek: Section 31’ review: Why this feels more like a superhero movie?

There’s some exciting news for Star Trek fans! The latest film of the much-loved franchise, Star Trek: Section 3, is here and features Robert Kazinsky, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Omari Hardwick, and Michelle Yeoh.

According to The New York Times review, this stark departure from the optimism and hope that typically define Star Trek immediately sets a disquieting tone. The scene, devoid of the franchise's core values of cooperation and understanding, serves as a stark reminder of the darkness that lurks beneath the surface of the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: Section 31: The disappointment

However, something unexpected occurs as Section 31 progresses — it ceases to be merely a bad Star Trek episode, it descends into an almost unwatchable level of dullness. It's not even entertainingly bad, or a compelling example of how to do the genre wrong. It simply seems indifferent to the demands of the genre, failing to engage with any of its conventions in a meaningful way.

In the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery, Georgiou, the evil mirror universe counterpart of Michael Burnham's beloved late Captain (as viewers of Discovery will recall), escapes the 32nd century and reunites with Section 31. Driven by her ruthless nature, she joined Starfleet's black ops division, Section 31.

Despite her treacherous tendencies, she continued to interact with the Discovery on occasion, even travelling into the distant future with the crew before being forced to return to her own time.

In the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery, Georgiou leaves the 32nd century and is reunited with Section 31.

Georgiou was an evil replica of Michael Burnham's beloved late Captain, as viewers of Discovery will remember. She joined Starfleet's black ops branch Section 31 because of her cruel tendencies, but she continued to visit the Discovery frequently and even went into the far future with it before being compelled to go back in time.

Section 31 is treated like a superhero movie

Section 31 feels more like a superhero film than a Star Trek adventure since it lacks the Starship Enterprise, Starfleet unitards and lectures on the Prime Directive, stated The New York Times review.

Craig Sweeny's screenplay, which debuted in 2019 as a spinoff series for Yeoh's role in Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024), finds it difficult to convey too much information in a short amount of time. (Yeoh's dance card swiftly filled up with the popularity of Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022.) Because of this, the fearlessly directed film, Section 31, by Olatunde Osunsanmi is full of head-snapping reversals and explanatory dialogues.

Even though Section 31 is a film, it feels more like the TV shows that might have been pilots in the days before streaming. But there is no way that anyone would want enough of this to start a series or sequel. On January 24, Star Trek: Section 31 will be available for streaming on Paramount+.
