Stadium 974 in Doha built for 2022 FIFA World Cup to be fully dismantled after tournament

Qatar was fully prepared to host the FIFA World Cup this year. To conduct the matches, it built seven new stadiums across the country.

One of those seven stadiums, Stadium 974 built in Doha, had unique construction. However, the stadium will disappear after the tournament.

According to the organisers, the Doha stadium, which has a seating capacity of forty thousand and is built as a port-side structure, is partially constructed from recycled materials, including steel and shipping containers.


The organisers said that it is possible to dismantle the stadium fully and even send it to different countries which need them. Many experts, from both - outside and inside the country, have praised the infrastructural design of the said stadium. However, they also said the design's success could only be assessed after the tournament ends.



The principle used in the construction of the establishment is sustainability. Karim Elgendy, an associate at the Chatham House, stated one of the main principles of sustainable construction is design to disassemble.

Stadium 974 is named after the number of containers used to build the stadium, which is con-incidentally Qatar's dialling code. This is the only non-air-conditioned stadium built for the tournament. Stadium 974 hosts only evening matches. The idea behind making this was to avoid a 'white elephant.
