Stable Diffusion lets you create what you think; Know how to use it and what are the minimum hardware requirements

Artificial Intelligence or AI has started to become a part of our lives, helping us with daily chores. It is also being used heavily in image generation and the results are so well-put. However, unlike most AI image generators that run on the cloud, Stable Diffusion stands out by allowing you to run it on your own personal computer and generate limitless images.

What is Stable Diffusion?

Stable Diffusion, a machine learning model that's open-source, has the ability to generate images from text, modify images based on text, or enhance low-resolution or low-detail images. It has been trained on billions of images and can produce results that are on par with those generated by DALL-E 2 and MidJourney.


While Stable Diffusion doesn't currently have a user-friendly interface like some AI image generators, it has a very liberal license and is completely free for personal use on both PC and Mac.

Minimum Requirements to run Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is not compatible with smartphones or most laptops. However, it can operate smoothly on an average gaming PC in 2023, provided that certain requirements are met.

These requirements include a GPU with a minimum of 6GB VRAM, which is found in most modern NVIDIA GPUs. Additionally, approximately 10GB of storage capacity on either a hard drive or solid-state drive is necessary. The Miniconda3 installer, Stable Diffusion files from GitHub, and the latest Checkpoints (Version 1.4 at the time of writing, with 1.5 expected soon) must also be obtained. Lastly, the Git Installer and Windows 8, 10, or 11 must be present. It is worth noting that Stable Diffusion also runs on Linux and macOS systems.

How to install and run Stable Diffusion?

To use Stable Diffusion, you need to install two programs, Git and Miniconda3, from their official sources. Git is a tool that allows developers to manage different versions of the software they're developing. Miniconda3 is a tool that lets you download, install, and manage all the libraries required for Stable Diffusion to function.

Installing Git:

Go to the Git website and download the Windows x64 installer.
Run the Git installer.
While the installer runs, select the default settings for all options except for one: "Adjusting Your PATH Environment". Make sure to select "Git From The Command Line And Also From 3rd-Party Software" for this option.
Click "Next" and finish up the installation.
You may need to restart your computer after installing Git.



Installing Miniconda3:

Go to the Miniconda3 download page and click "Miniconda3 Windows 64-bit" to download the latest installer.
Double-click the downloaded executable to start the installation.
Tick the box that says "All Users".
Click "Next" and finish up the installation.
You may need to restart your computer after installing Miniconda3.

After installing these, you need to download the latest checkpoint and Stable Diffusion from GitHub. Finally, you need to create a folder named "stable-diffusion" and prepare a few folders where you'll unpack all Stable Diffusion's files, then execute a few commands in the Miniconda3 terminal to finish the installation.
