Creator’s Stressful Journey: From Lost Teeth to Season 3
While Squid Game continues to enjoy success, it has come at a personal cost for Hwang Dong-hyuk. In past interviews, Hwang has shared the extreme stress of producing the first season, revealing that he lost several teeth during its creation, as mentioned in a report by IGN. He recently disclosed that he had lost as many as nine teeth, a toll that took a heavy mental and physical toll.
Despite the challenges, Hwang is determined to push through, with the financial rewards of Season 2 expected to compensate for the limited earnings from the first season.
“It was all about the money,” Hwang admitted in a BBC interview, referring to his decision to return for the second season. He also mentioned that the initial compensation from Netflix was modest, and the massive success of the first season did not reflect in his paycheck.
Netflix, however, maintains that it offers “competitive” compensation to its creators, assuring that even modestly successful shows are well-compensated.
Season 3: The Final Chapter
Looking ahead, Squid Game fans can expect Season 3 to be the series' last. Hwang confirmed that the conclusion of the story arc will come with the third season, marking the end of the intense competition and its lingering moral questions. He explained that the direction of the story naturally led to a fitting conclusion, stating, “I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character.”
