The theme for Kwanzaa 2022 is "Kwanzaa, Culture, and the Practice of Freedom: A Message and Model for Our Times,". The name "Kwanzaa" comes from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits" in Swahili.
Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Karenga, the chair of Africana Studies at Cal State Long Beach. "Kwanzaa is and has always been a celebration of freedom, a celebration of hearts and minds free from the catechism of impossibilities and forms and practises of oppression taught and imposed by a racist society," Karenga wrote in the founder's message.
Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday celebrated by people of African descent in the United States and other parts of the world. It is observed from December 26 to January 1 each year and is a time for people to celebrate their African heritage and culture.

During Kwanzaa, people celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa, known as the Nguzo Saba. These principles are: umoja (unity), kujichagulia (self-determination), ujima (collective work and responsibility), ujamaa (cooperative economics), nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity), and imani (faith). Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of these principles, and people often engage in activities such as lighting candles, singing, dancing, and sharing traditional African meals and stories to celebrate and honor their culture.
