‘Sound of Philadelphia’ co-creator Thom Bell passes away at 79
Thom Bell, a vital figure in creating the intricately choreographed ‘Sound of Philadelphia’, passed away at the age of 79. The reason for death was not revealed.

The prolific songwriter and producer Thom Bell has passed away at the age of 79.
According to his publicist, he passed away in his Bellingham, Washington, home. The reason for death was not revealed. Bell has contributed to several classic songs including “Betcha by Golly Wow-Stylistics,” “Rubberband Man by The Spinners,” and “Backstabbers by The O'Jays.”
Philadelphia R&B Radio presenter Patty Jackson remembered Bell as a record producer, arranger and composer who was recognised for his work with Linda Creed, Gamble and Huff, the numerous hits, the inventors of Philly soul. On its website, R&B radio also shared a video of the Stylistics' 1972 hit "People Make the World Go Round," which was produced by Bell.
Nile Rodgers also paid tribute to Bell, calling him one of the greatest of all time.
According to Bell's attorney, Bell made an irreparable and enduring impact on the history of popular music, but more importantly, he will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a kind, friendly and family man. “One of the greats has been sadly lost to the music industry,” he added.

He co-wrote several soul songs with Linda Creed, including "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," "You Are Everything," "You Make Me Feel Brand New," and "Betcha By Golly, Wow." He also co-wrote and produced songs for a young Elton John in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including "Are You Ready for Love" and "Mama Can't Buy You Love."
