While "Afterlife" took the ghostbusting adventure to rural Oklahoma, the franchise's upcoming fifth installment returns to its roots in the bustling city of New York. The trailer for "Frozen Empire" depicts a serene NYC summer suddenly besieged by an ominous "death chill," prompting Paul Rudd to lead a motley crew of Ghostbusters in a battle against this icy menace.
"Ghostbusters: Afterlife," directed by Jason Reitman, son of the original "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman, premiered in November 2021. The narrative followed a single mother and her two children who uncovered their grandfather's hidden legacy, becoming intricately linked to the Ghostbusters' legacy.
In addition to the newcomers, including Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace, the film welcomed back the original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver. Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Aykroyd collaborated on the screenplay, with Ivan Reitman serving as producer.
Directed by Gil Kenan, the upcoming movie's production was teased by Reitman in an Instagram post at the iconic "Ghostbusters" firehouse, with the announcement of Kenan as director accompanied by his poignant reflection on the honor of contributing to the Ghostbusters legacy.
As the fifth installment in the franchise, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" follows the series' lineage from the 1984 original, "Ghostbusters II" in 1989, the female-led "Ghostbusters" in 2016, and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" in 2021. Sony has scheduled the film's release for March 29.
