Sony unveils compact PS5 models: Price, specs, and release date

Sony has officially introduced two compact versions of the PlayStation 5, offering a 30% reduction in size and notable weight reductions. The new models come with a few surprises for gamers, including a detachable disc drive, but also a slight price increase.

Both the PS5 with the disc drive and the PS5 Digital Edition will be available for $499.99, representing a $50 bump from the previous model. These sleeker versions are set to hit the market in November and will gradually replace the existing stock of the original PS5.

One notable change is the absence of a vertical stand included in the package, requiring an additional $29.99 purchase for those who prefer it. Furthermore, the detachable disc drive for the PS5 Digital Edition will be available separately for $79.99.


It's important to clarify that these new models do not mark a mid-generation upgrade, contrary to rumors about a potential PS5 Pro. Gamers may opt to wait and see if a PS5 Pro materializes before making their purchase decision.

This announcement coincides with Sony's preparations for the upcoming launch of the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2, an exclusive game for the PS5, making the sleeker PS5 models an attractive choice for this holiday season.
