Presents are customarily exchanged on the evening of December 24 in most regions of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. There are additional customs from throughout the world that we haven't adopted here, such as eating a KFC meal, which is popular in Japan.

Several European and Latin American countries exchange gifts and begin their celebrations on December 24. This practice is observed in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil, to name a few.

It's known as Heiligabend Bescherung in Germany, and it's also why the Royal Family exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve. It is said that the royals have kept this practice going for almost 200 years because of their German origin.

For these countries, December 24 marks the beginning of Christmas, which, rather than being an all-day event, often begins in the afternoon. Shops typically stay open until the early afternoon for last-minute shopping, and the festivities may not begin until the evening, when Christmas supper is given and presents may be exchanged. Some individuals open their gifts at midnight, while others wait until the next morning.

Throughout history, December 25 has been seen as a religious holiday and “holy day” spent relaxing and worshipping, rather than a day of celebration.

This is why, according to custom, Christmas supper is served on December 24 and Christmas brunch is served on December 25. So, in essence, Christmas is split into two days.

Because they mostly celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, December 25 is not considered Christmas Day. The dates and their meanings remain constant; they are simply observed differently in different countries.
