Social Security payment schedule for 2027: When will your check arrive and why could some payments reach you earlier than expected?

The 2027 Social Security payment calendar is already available, so beneficiaries can see when their checks are scheduled to arrive throughout the year. For most people, the system is easier than the full calendar makes it look.

Your birthday determines which Wednesday you are paid. There are also separate rules for SSI recipients and people who have been receiving Social Security for many years.

Which Wednesday is your Social Security payment date?

For people who started receiving Social Security on or after May 1, 1997, the payment schedule is based on the day of the month they were born.

• Birthday from 1st–10th: second Wednesday
• Birthday from 11th–20th: third Wednesday
• Birthday from 21st–31st: fourth Wednesday

The pattern stays remarkably consistent. Once you know which birthday group you belong to, you can use the same column throughout the year. The SSA's official calendar lists these three Wednesday groups for 2027.

Why are some Social Security payments made on the 3rd?

There is another group that does not follow the Wednesday schedule. If you received Social Security before May 1997, your Social Security payment is generally scheduled for the third of the month.

The same third-of-the-month rule can apply to people who receive both Social Security and SSI. When the scheduled date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment moves to the preceding business day.

The January, April, July and October dates stand out because the third falls on a weekend. The payment therefore moves to the previous business day.

When will SSI arrive in 2027?

SSI follows a different calendar. It is normally paid on the first day of the month. If that day is a weekend or federal holiday, the payment is moved earlier.

That last point can cause confusion. A payment arriving in December does not mean an extra SSI check has been added. It is the January payment arriving early because January 1 falls on a weekend or holiday.

What should beneficiaries mark on their calendar?

For most Social Security recipients, there is no need to keep track of every date. Find your birthday range, choose the matching column and mark those Wednesdays.

People receiving SSI, both SSI and Social Security, or older Social Security claims should use the separate schedule. Those are the payments most likely to appear earlier than expected.
