Millions of Americans will not get their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment in September 2025. This gap is because of the Social Security Administration’s payment schedule system. The SSA pays more than 70 million Americans each month. Payments are staggered to prevent the system from getting overloaded.

When the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSI payments are sent earlier than usual. September 1, 2025, falls on Labor Day, which is a federal holiday. Because of that, SSI recipients will get their September payment early — on Friday, August 29, 2025. This means two SSI checks will come in August: the regular one on August 1 and the early September one on August 29, as reported by The Sun.

Bank accounts will show no SSI deposit at all in September 2025. The unusual schedule affects seniors, disabled people, and individuals with limited income and resources across the U.S. This payment quirk has already happened several times in 2025.

SSI payment schedule 2025 explained

In May 2025, SSI recipients got two payments — one on May 1 and another on May 30 — since June 1 was a weekend. That meant no SSI payment was issued in June 2025. A similar situation happened in March 2025 because February’s double payout left no payment the following month. This pattern will continue to happen again before 2025 ends, as per The Sun report.

According to the report by SSA's 2025 calendar, SSI beneficiaries will get two payments in October: one on October 1 and another on October 31. That means there will be no SSI money distributed in November 2025. The SSA released an official SSI payment schedule for 2025–2026.

SSI Dates are:

  • Aug. 1, 2025 - August payment
  • Aug. 29, 2025 - September payment
  • Oct. 1, 2025 - October payment
  • Oct. 31, 2025 - November payment
  • Dec. 1, 2025 - December payment
  • Dec. 31, 2025 - January 2026 payment
  • Jan. 30, 2026 - February payment
  • Feb. 27, 2026 - March payment

The last double SSI payment of 2025 will come on December 31, and it will count for January 2026. This change only applies to SSI, not to regular Social Security retirement or survivor checks. Regular Social Security benefits are still issued on Wednesdays, based on birthdays.

Social Security benefits and COLA increase

Birthdays from the 1st to the 10th - paid on the second Wednesday. Birthdays from the 11th to the 20th - paid on the third Wednesday. Birthdays after the 20th - paid on the fourth Wednesday. People who started receiving benefits before May 1997 follow a different schedule, with payments always on the 3rd of each month, according to the report by The Sun.

As of May 2025, the average Social Security benefit was $2,002.39. SSI payments are much smaller — capped at around $1,415 per individual in 2025. About 7.4 million Americans currently receive SSI benefits each month.

Around one-third of SSI recipients also collect regular Social Security benefits. That means some people may see three separate payments in certain months. The SSA says if a payment does not arrive, people should wait three business days before contacting the agency, as stated by The Sun.

Looking forward, bigger changes are coming in 2026 through the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which is tied to inflation. The Senior Citizens League now expects a 2.7% COLA boost in 2026. This is higher than the earlier projection of 2.5%. The official COLA figure will be announced in October 2025, as per SSA report.
