Social Security COLA 2027: Retirees are just one day away from finding out what their next check will look like. Tomorrow, October 14, the Social Security Administration will announce the official cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, for 2027. Unti...

Social Security COLA 2027: How 3 Months of Inflation Data Will Decide Your Raise
Social Security’s 2027 raise is due October 14: The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, October 14. The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) is forecasting 3.5%.

If that’s right, the average monthly benefit of $1,940.08 would rise by about $67.90, to $2,007.98.

Why do July, August and September inflation figures matter?

The COLA doesn’t reflect a full year of inflation. It comes from the third quarter only: July, August and September.

The government uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as the CPI-W. It compares prices over those three months with the same months a year earlier. The percentage change becomes the raise.

July’s CPI-W was up 3.4% from a year earlier. August was up 3.5%, according to the figures TSCL cited. September’s report completes the calculation, so 3.5% stays an estimate until the official number comes out.

What 3.5% adds to a monthly check

Everyone gets the same percentage, but the dollar amount depends on the current benefit. A person receiving $1,500 a month would gain $52.50. At $2,000, the gain is $70, bringing the check to $2,070. At $2,500, it’s $87.50.

Over a year, the extra $70 comes to $840 before any deductions. The average increase of $67.90 works out to roughly $815 a year.

The new amounts apply to benefits starting in January 2027.

Why a bigger check may not feel bigger

The COLA is set by price changes that have already happened. It can’t predict what groceries, utilities or medical bills will cost next year. A larger check helps only if it stays ahead of those bills.

TSCL’s 2026 Senior Survey points to the strain. Of the older Americans surveyed, 89% said the 2026 COLA was too low. And 44% said they depend entirely on Social Security.

The survey doesn’t speak for every retiree. Still, the second number matters. For people with no other income, the annual adjustment is the only thing that changes their budget.

When will the 2027 Social Security COLA take effect?

The official announcement is expected on October 14, 2026, after the September inflation figures are released. If confirmed, the 2027 adjustment will take effect for Social Security benefits payable in January 2027.

Retirees planning for next year will be asking the same thing. How much of the extra $67.90 is left once the essential bills are paid?
