Social Security alert: who gets paid this week, and why some checks could be slashed in half

This week, who receives their Social Security payment?

The SSA's payment calendar indicates that on Wednesday, Aug. 27, beneficiaries who were born on the 21st through the 31st of their birth month will get their monthly Social Security benefit.

Social Security benefits are paid when?


Social Security payouts are normally disbursed on Wednesdays, primarily to older or retired claimants.

If the birthdate of recipients are fallen in the first and tenth of the month, the payments are made on the second Wednesday of the payment month.

According to the SSA payment calendar, payments are made on the third Wednesday for recipients born between the eleventh and the twentieth of the month, and on the fourth Wednesday for those born after the twentieth.

This week, Social Security claimants will get their third payment for the month of August. Here is a reminder, though, that people who previously received excessive benefits from the Social Security Administration can receive lesser payouts.

For those who have been overpaid but have not started repaying, the agency is anticipated to start withholding 50 per cent of compensation.

Although the SSA has not disclosed the number of individuals overpaid, a February 2025 investigation by the Office of the Inspector General revealed that the government overpaid $13.6 billion in Social Security benefits between fiscal years 2020 to 2023.

Checks for Supplemental Security Income should have been sent to recipients on Friday, August 1, the first working day of the month. According to the SSA calendar, SSI checks will be distributed on the following dates in 2025 and early 2026:
