Social Security 2027 COLA: October 14 decision nears as inflation data points to a 3.6% increase, but what could it actually mean for your monthly check?

Social Security 2027 COLA date: The Oct. 14 announcement will settle the 2027 Social Security COLA. Current estimates point to roughly 3.4% to 3.6%, after earlier forecasts reached 3.8%. The final increase depends on third-quarter CPI-W data.

Social Security’s 2027 COLA announcement is coming October 14, with current forecasts pointing to a possible 3.4% to 3.6% increase.
Social Security 2027 COLA forecast: The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on Oct. 14. For millions of Social Security recipients, that number will determine how much their monthly benefits rise next year.

The annual COLA is meant to help benefits keep pace with inflation. It isn't based on a single inflation reading, though. The calculation uses a specific measure of consumer prices and a specific three-month period.

How the Social Security COLA is actually calculated

The adjustment is tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly known as CPI-W. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the index each month.

The Social Security Administration compares the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year with the average from the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA became effective.

There is an important catch. If the calculation produces no increase, or the rounded figure reaches zero, there is no COLA for that year. For 2027, the September inflation reading is therefore an important missing piece before the official number can be calculated. Projections made before then are estimates, not the final benefit increase.

The COLA is effective with December benefits, although most beneficiaries see the increased payment in January 2027.

Current projections

Several estimates have changed as inflation data have come in. The Senior Citizens League recently projected a 3.6% COLA for 2027. Based on the average Social Security benefit used in its calculation, that would amount to roughly $69.75 more per month if the estimate became the final adjustment.

Independent Social Security and Medicare analyst Mary Johnson has offered a slightly lower estimate of 3.4%. Neither figure is official yet. Earlier projections had been higher. Estimates reached about 3.8% during the summer before later inflation readings pulled forecasts down.

Shannon Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League, pointed to the unusual movement in inflation this year. The group's figures showed inflation at 2.2% in January, rising to 4.4% in May and then falling to 3.5% in June.

The latest employment figures add another piece to the broader economic picture. U.S. employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, down from a revised 133,000 in August. The unemployment rate also edged up to 4.2% from 4.1%.

Economists had expected about 90,000 new jobs. Those numbers are important for the Federal Reserve because employment is one of its two main mandates. A weaker labor market could affect how policymakers approach interest rates at their next meeting.

The economy has also dealt with trade disputes, tariffs, elevated interest rates and higher energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions. Each can affect prices in different ways.

The increase will raise the monthly benefit. It won't necessarily mean that every retiree has more money left over, though. Housing, food, health care and other expenses can rise at different rates from the CPI-W measure used for the COLA.
