SNAP website crashes: Recipients left in limbo amid government update confusion - are you affected?
The USDA website showed a message saying updates about SNAP funding won’t be released because of the government shutdown. According to the USDA website, “Due to the Radical Left Democrat shutdown, this government website will not be updated during the funding lapse.”

The USDA website also stated: “President Trump has made it clear he wants to keep the government open and support those who feed, fuel, and clothe the American people”, as stated in the report by The Sun. The shutdown started on October 1, which caused confusion about SNAP updates and benefits.

Because the website isn’t updated, recipients may not know about changes coming to the program in the next few weeks. It’s unclear what will happen with November SNAP benefits if the shutdown continues; the website gives no information.

Why the shutdown happened

Congress failed to reach a consensus on the funding bill, whilst also rejecting the Republican formula of a short- term spending proposal to at least avoid the government shutdown till November 21. But Democrats did not relent as it would have meant the effective end of social programs like Medicaid. Though SNAP benefits for October are expected to be credited as per schedule, uncertainty looms over the November payments.

Changes to SNAP rules

New rules affect ABAWDs (able-bodied adults without dependents), people with children, veterans, unhoused people, and those who aged out of foster care. From Nov 1, ABAWDs will only get benefits for 3 months in 3 years unless they meet new work exemptions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

To be exempt from work rules, ABAWDs must now be 65 or older. Previously, the age was 59. Childcare exemption now applies to children under 14 instead of under 18. Exemptions for veterans, unhoused people, and young adults who aged out of foster care at 24 or under have been removed. In Oregon, 313,000 out of 740,000 SNAP recipients are expected to lose benefits due to these changes.

How SNAP works

In order to fund nutritionally balanced food for low- income families, SNAP benefits can be accrued by submitting eligibility applications at local SNAP stations, online or via a phone call. The eligibility criteria is decided on minimum income and number of family members.

Once approved, usually within 30 days of application, an EBT card is issued with SNAP points. It can now be used as a debit card, albeit only at grocery stores for vegetables, meat and other essential food items. Nothing else, be it vitamins or alcohol, can be accessed with that card.

Other groups affected

Changes also affect households receiving utility assistance and some undocumented immigrants. Utility assistance now requires at least one elderly or disabled household member. Benefit amounts are being adjusted for cost of living.

Maximum SNAP amounts increased:
