Snap layoffs
Snap Inc. said it will cut about 16% of its workers, which is around 1,000 jobs. The company shared this update in a letter filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. CEO Evan Spiegel said these changes are needed for the company’s long-term growth. He said fast growth in AI is helping teams reduce repetitive work and work faster. He also said AI helps teams better support users, partners, and advertisers.

Snap AI growth and cost-saving push

Snap said small teams are already using AI to improve products like Snapchat+ and its ad system, as stated by Yahoo Finance. The company is also trying to cut costs by about $500 million every year by late 2026. Snap wants a clearer path to making profit, not just revenue. After the news, Snap’s stock went up by almost 6%. This rise gave some short-term relief because the stock had already fallen about 25% over the past year.

Job layoffs due to AI and cost cutting

Workers in the US who lose jobs will get 4 months of severance pay and healthcare. Employees outside the US will get support based on local rules. Snap is not alone, many companies are cutting jobs while talking about AI benefits. Oracle has cut thousands of jobs to invest more money in AI and cloud systems. Meta said it will cut about 10% of its workforce, which is around 8,000 jobs.

Meta’s HR head Janelle Gale said the cuts are needed because of high AI spending. Meta will also stop hiring for about 6,000 planned roles. Meta had already cut another 5% of staff earlier in January, as stated by Yahoo Finance. Reports say Meta reorganized its Reality Labs team to work faster. Microsoft started a voluntary buyout program for about 7% of its US workforce. This program targets older employees whose age plus work years equal 70 or more.

AI impact on jobs and future work

Amazon has also cut thousands of corporate jobs. CEO Andy Jassy said AI will help reduce the number of workers needed. He said the goal is to reduce company complexity and improve efficiency. Block cut about 40% of its workforce to reduce team size to 6,000, as stated by Yahoo Finance.

CEO Jack Dorsey said this is because of new AI tools and smaller teams. Salesforce cut about 1,000 jobs to focus more on AI products. CEO Marc Benioff said AI has improved productivity a lot. He said the company is now using AI coding tools instead of relying only on human engineers. Overall, many big companies are following the same trend: use AI, cut jobs, and try to increase profits.
