Millions of Americans dependent on the SNAP can expect their food stamp payments soon
Millions of Americans dependent on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can expect their food stamp payments to restart by Wednesday, November 5, 2025, following a federal judge's order directing the Trump administration to resume benefits despite the ongoing government shutdown.

The government shutdown that began in late 2025 caused SNAP payments to halt on November 1, impacting approximately 42 million recipients who rely on this vital food assistance for monthly groceries.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) had previously warned that there would be no full distribution of SNAP benefits for November due to lack of funding authorization during the shutdown.

However, a federal judge in Rhode Island ruled on October 31 that the administration must tap contingency funds amounting to $5.25 billion to ensure at least partial SNAP payments.

A judge in Massachusetts similarly ordered the USDA to use emergency funds to cover November's benefits, mandating an update on payment plans by early November. These rulings aim to alleviate immediate hardships faced by low-income Americans amid the budget stalemate.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on November 2 that efforts are ongoing to comply with the court orders, and SNAP payments could resume by November 5. The administration is exploring legal avenues and fund sources to expedite benefit distribution.

Despite possible delays, some states are preparing to begin issuing benefits as soon as federal authorization is received.

SNAP recipients use Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards loaded with funds to purchase groceries, including essential items like fruits, vegetables, meats, bread, and beverages.

Although November's scheduled payments were temporarily paused, existing balances from prior months remain available for use at SNAP-authorized retailers.
