Snail girl trending: What is it and why has it become a craze in offices? Here is an explainer

Don't push yourself to the maximum limit, relax, take a breath, and work slowly. Keep your career ambition within your limit and strike a balance between work and life. If you are doing these things, you are a snail girl. Know in detail.

'Snail girl' is the opposite of 'girl boss' and it refers to one who prioritizes slowing things down and taking it easier on the job. It refers to those workers who instead of fanatically focusing on ‘the grind’, slow down and be kind to themselves at work. Australian fashion designer Sienna introduced the term in her article titled 'Snail girl era: Why I’m slowing down and choosing to be happy rather than busy'.

Go slow

Explaining snail girl, she said, "She goes slow, retreats when she needs and follows the path at her own pace." She further says that it does not mean taking a holiday or not working at all, it simply means not being hard on oneself and striking a work-life balance. She also said that snail girl can look different to different people, but at the crux of it, it is about slowing down and being kind to yourself.

Limit your career goal

Sienna also recognizes that the idea of slowing down at work comes from a place of 'financial privilege' and she understands that everyone can not follow it for financial reasons. However, she explains that everybody can incorporate a little snail girl into one's life without stopping the cash flow. She gives the cue and says that one can be a snail girl by setting personal and professional boundaries and protecting peace.

Change in ambition

Snail girl has become a trend in Australian workplaces. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about 1.3 million people changed their careers in 2012. Talking to 'New York Post', Jennifer Luke, a researcher at the University of Southern Queensland said that the snail girl concept is not surprising as there has been a change in how individuals view their career ambitions.

'Bare Minimum Mondays'

Similarly, Adelaide marketing manager Caitlin Winter has introduced another concept, 'Bare Minimum Mondays'. It refers to a 'slow and gentle start' to the working week by easing the usual pressures and expectations that arise after the weekend. In a bid to ease the pressure, people are asked to work from home on Mondays, and they are given the minimum work for that role so that they can begin it with ease.
