Sister André, French nun and the world's oldest person passed away on Tuesday at the age of 118. Sister André lived in the southern city of Toulon in France.

The news of her demise came into light after the city’s mayor, Hubert Falco, announced it via Twitter. "It is with immense sadness and emotion that I learnt tonight of the passing of the world’s oldest person #SisterAndré," the mayor wrote on Twitter.

Additional details were shared by her spokesperson, David Tavella, who said that she passed away on January 17 at 2 am and lived near Toulon. "There is great sadness, but she wanted it to happen, it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it is freedom," he added.




Sister André, whose birth name was Lucile Randon, was born on February 11, 1904. According to a statement released by Guinness in April 2022, she devoted the majority of her life to religious pursuits.

Before becoming a Catholic nun, she used to look after children during World War II. Later on, she spent next 28 years caring for elderly people at a hospital and orphans.

As per Guinness, Sister André was the oldest nun to ever live.

Sister André received a handwritten birthday note from French President Emmanuel Macron on her 118th birthday.
